FT.com breaks desktop news
Readers of FT.com will be able to choose how they receive news on their computers thanks to the launch of a new delivery system. The desktop news service comes as a result of a deal with push technology leaders, Skinkers, and goes live today.
04 April 2006
The service can be configured to deliver and display breaking news in three familiar formats: inside a desktop ticker, as desktop alerts and in a feed browser or any combination of these. Readers simply select the built in FT.com channels or drag-and-drop the feeds they want, to have their news delivered in the way they want.
This innovative product has been developed by Skinkers and will allow users to enjoy the benefits of the latest RSS (Really Simple Syndication) technology without having to know what RSS is or how it works.
The service will be completely FT.com branded and readers will be able to choose from more than 70 different FT news feeds at launch. Users will also be able to drag and drop RSS feeds from other websites into the FT.com service.
Chris Osborne, Head of Business Development, FT.com said: "We believe this new service is exactly what online audiences have been looking for. It's a simple and versatile solution allowing readers to get the news they want, in the way they want it, without over-crowding their email. This service will provide our readers with all the advantages of RSS, without having to understand the technology."
The FT.com desktop news service acts as an advertising platform. Its design enables ad-server based advertising to be placed next to the content users are reading.
Matteo Berlucchi, CEO of Skinkers, commented: "FT.com has always been at the forefront of online publishing, and this new launch will keep them there. Not only are they providing their readers with a new and easy to use desktop news system, but they are also continuing to monetize their content by being able to offer sponsorship and advertising opportunities within the product."
The service also allows FT.com to provide an improved reading and user experience for their audience, maximising the company's connection and engagement with their users.
The FT.com deal comes just a month after Skinkers announced a £2 million investment from venture capital investor, NewMediaSPARK. This new capital represents the first institutional funding for Skinkers since its inception in 2002, and the company is using the new funds to promote its existing services, including the recently launched branded RSS readers, finalise the development of its mobile offering and increasing its international sales capabilities.
